Sounds like a line from some sinister ditty - 'lingers the butcher ... by the grazing lamb, as he feeds the pig which is soon to be ham.'
However, 'Lingers' is actually the name of a family-run butcher's shop in Bedford. It's well known for the effigy of a proud butcher standing above the entrance. It is situated opposite St Cuthbert's church.

I sat on a traffic island and sketched this intriguing corner and roundabout.
I like the way that the roads disappear up hill to the left, or vanish into intriguing, jumbled urban distances, or plunge downhill right towards the river, or swirl into cul-de-sacs, or spin behind me straight into town along Mill Street.
One 20th century block, recently housing the Kraken gym, rises above the 19th century rooftops. Otherwise the scene is long unchanged, including the stepped gable of the Castle pub. But I also like all the 21st century 'street furniture' - the yellow lines, the keep left sign, the street lights, the bin and the bollards. I find pleasure in the uniquely odd clutter of our lives.
