Illustrations

These illustrations of metaphorical phrases were drawn in 1986. I printed them as cards and compiled a 'First Phrase Book' of 24 or so. They are drawn in ink on paper and measure roughly 150x105 mm.

I'd been with friends to see the Winifred Knights exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2016. Knights' scenes and motifs appear as the diners. At the Gallery cafe, one of us, not me, had a blueberry muffin. We talked about a childhood in India and the far East - reflected in the map of drizzled icing. Afterwards we dined out at Chutney's unlicensed restaurant near Euston Station. We bought Tiger beer from the off-licence opposite and were allowed to bring it in to drink with our curries. I think we ate vegetarian - but the tiger is salivating at Knights' image of St Martin and his horse.
