Back to the finger lakes this afternoon, where I met another photographer. It's a popular place.
First I drew with pencil for an hour, following the instructions of Ian Roberts (www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAcWM6rnnlA) to look at the 'value masses' within a cropped composition - in this case an island in a lake surrounded by trees. I got distracted by a duck and puzzled by the way that the tone of the island willow blended with the trees behind. So I need to practise simplifying. Then I turned around and spent a half hour trying to catch the evening reflections in the lake behind me. There's a lot to learn. I'm not sure that I've advanced from what I painted a few days ago in the same place - but maybe if I pursue Ian Roberts' approaches, I will. |
