St Lawrence's church in Willington today. It was drizzling, so I sheltered under a conifer. It wasn't the view I would have chosen, but it was dry and not too cold. Over the fields to the right is Gostwick manor. Sir John Gostwick rose to local - and national - prominence in the 16th century. He was an MP, sheriff and some kind of financial adviser to Henry the eighth. I think Sir John's tomb is in the church - but it was locked, so i couldn't check. I liked the tended graves, the chunky tower and the pale and leafless woods beyond. |
