November 5. Skyjack 3: three shelf-stackers in the warehouse. Stacks of plastic-wrapped goods on the left, piles of empty blue pallets to the right. The skyjack lift is necessary: there are 6 levels of 8-foot shelving under the 50-foot roof. The whole process has a complex choreography of goods-in to goods-out, with fork-lifts and lollops gliding about from lorry to shelf. These guys were 3 out of 150, working at the very end of one of the many aisles. And nowadays it's managed and monitored electronically throughout. These are the invisible people who keep us fed. |
