Bedford as night falls. The swans gather at dusk on this stone landing stage and preen themselves. When the fireworks explode, they and their necks and take to the water. The embankment stretches down to the bridge which you can see with its road lights crossing the river to the black block of the Mercure Hotel. I am painting a series of night-time scenes (cf 27/10 Before the storm) - lights on the river and a number of well-lit interiors seen from the darkness of the street. I'm trying to learn more by working larger (this is 15"x11.5"), using heavier paper, gouache as well as watercolour, and more water. |
