A sketch down James Street with a view down the alleyway to 'pigeon square'. Only one pigeon remained, but a whole flock descended and departed while I sketched. More than two people passed, and all the while soulful music played from somewhere round the corner - a compilation of 'familiar tunes' accompanied by words in a language other than English: 'Quando quando quando ... I did it my way etc.' The sunlight came and went as I sat between two boarded-up shops, beneath the obligatory traditional lantern, looking at three trees coming into blossom, with their cross-hatching of shadow on the walls and pavement. Even the least conventionally pre-possessing places are enhanced by foliage and sunlight. While I worked on this at home, later, I listened to 'Private Passions' with Steve Rosenberg: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001kpfl |
