H had a history of mental health difficulties and a heroin habit. He ended up in prison. During his time there, he went on detox. However, on release, his self-confidence was so low that he ended up living on the streets where an Outreach Worker found him. H was taken to a nightshelter where he accepted a warm bed, clean clothes and a hot meal. He remained there for a time. With encouragement, he attended a range of different training courses and began to re-engage with others. He learnt how to manage his time, how to deal with conflict, and how to cope with pressure & disappointment without turning to drugs. “It’s not just about opportunity. First of all, I was given confidence and then I was able to take advantage of opportunities. The confidence came first." H has now taken charge of his life. He has healthy friendships and a job with responsibility for others. |
