I was looking at the green river in its green tunnel, but I actually fell asleep as I painted. Maybe it was the soporific effect of the dappled trees and the lapping water; or maybe it was the consequence of hot and sleepless nights; or maybe it was just that the longest day was taking its toll. Anyhow, I dozed off. The sun moved through the branches, creating different shapes and shadows; mariners and paddle-boarders passed through, as did a swimmer, rippling the surface; small creatures dropped on me from the ash trees above. I woke, packed up and left. Fortunately, I had just earned £50 more for charity from my recent commission, so the day was not wasted. |
