This hedge has appealed to me for several years, so I took a photo of it and tried to paint it. I think I was intrigued by its dark interior where Arthur Rackham like creatures might dwell, as well by the contrast between the tight green foliage and the deader brush which had been starved of sunlight. I stayed up till 2 am last night getting lost in the shades and colours. I don't know whether its some kind of lichen on the stems, but some parts are more or less cerulean blue, others are russet, purple, silver, blue and pink. Behind are the blank walls and windows of the house, in front is the serried rank of upright bricks of the garden wall. Black ink and no black ink. It's a study I returned to today because I didn't get out to the woods till dusk was falling. A fox barked twice and I came home. Tomorrow I will sketch again. |
