All Saints, Milton Ernest - in the rain today. I should have sketched inside where it was drier and warmer and where someone was playing the organ. This sketch is partly painted by rain. I started, stopped, restarted and then packed up and drove home. Most beech leaves lay in thick golden layers on the grass, syrupy with rain. Some still held to the branches like huge orange raindrops. The gravestones tilted across the lush green grass. I'd just visited St Thomas a Becket church in Clapham with its early Norman tower. But the conifer under which I sheltered proved too porous and drippy. |
