This is a boy walking through a rubbish tip in Taiz, Yemen. He seems to be walking barefoot, carrying two bags. I think he may be scavenging. I have based this sketch on a photograph from the website of International Committee of the Red Cross: www.icrc.org/en/document/yemen-struggle-through-six-photographers-lenses I cannot do much to make this boy's life better, but I can think about our shared human condition and campaign against the causes of war, especially the greed that drives it. Who would not worry about the future of blameless young people forced to walk through a world of adult waste? As I sketched, I held him in my mind. And I thought that, in place of the many blue plastic refuse sacks, I would at least give him a little pink beetroot. |
