83 York Street - being renovated. The builder thinks it was built in 1905 - perhaps for the growing middle class who could commute to London. Someone built a porch over the front door, but it's been taken down. There's a wheelbarrow of sand, various planks, a trench and a pile of bricks wrapped in plastic. They're opening up the loft space. I sat and sketched in the late afternoon. You can just see the shadow of the chimney of the 1930s? houses opposite. Perhaps, a hundred years ago, before their view was blocked by new building, the occupants of 83 watched the sun set over the fields and dreamed of life after the First World War without a deadly flu pandemic. I liked the pipework of 85. |
