A surreal creature stares brazenly straight at me. I am on the embankment, next to the butterfly bridge (seen in the background). Geese and swans gather here expectantly, accustomed to regular bread hand-outs. I saw three women arrive and empty three loaves of sliced bread into the river. I'm more than unsure about that - especially in this climate. This swan seem affronted that I had arrived empty-handed. So I left before he could take any punitive action. I see that someone has ringed his(?) right leg. I'm glad that wasn't my job. But imagine this bird gliding gracefully across the water, powerful webs concealed beneath the surface, and it's a different story. I've been looking at the paintings of Isaac Levitan and admiring how he illuminates silver birches against a grey-green Russian landscape.
