This is the result of sitting, in a bad mood, on the concrete pier at the foot of the butterfly bridge for two hours. I was sketching willows 'aslant the brook.' I wasn't unduly pestered by wildfowl, although ducks and geese flapped about me on the bank as bread in slices rained from the bridge above. I wonder what it is about the sign 'PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE GEESE' that some people do not understand. Had I brought my chair, I suppose I would have been more tolerant. My eye was first caught by the contrasting light and dark benches opposite, then by the darkness of branches showing intermittently between the trailing willow leaves, and then by my alternating vertical (leaf) and horizontal (water) marks. Only the willow bark, the bank and the occasional leaf achieved the rare status of a diagonal or curved line. |
