I think today's second attempt at yesterday's head shows better proportions and improved observation. But perhaps I needed to have done the first in order to manage the second.
Today's challenge (no. 14) was architecture, pen and ink, 10 minutes.
I found a park bench in the shade and sat and sketched the cafe. I started with pen and ink and then added tones with a brush. After 10 minutes, I took the first photo.
I continued for a further 20 minutes, painting the background trees in order to strengthen to shape of the cafe. The brightness of the afternoon sun made the tiles gleam, and cast dark shadows in the porch. I hadn't had time to show that by using line alone. It was about 6p.m. and, as the sun sank, the shadows lengthened across the whole roof (apart from the face on the far left). It was too late to change the marks I'd made for the earlier shadows.
Challenges 15 and 16 are quick abstracts, first in pastels, then in charcoal.
