Challenge no 8: abstract collage
Scraps of sandpaper, a handful of sycamore seeds, a rubber band, an advertising slogan, a receipt and an exam script: the detritus of garage shelves placed on a spiral bound pad. I didn't know where I was going with this, but I tried to resist any representational pull. Nonetheless, I've used sombre tones and displayed a weakness for right angles. I suppose the advertising slogan was a confession that I, for one, didn't 'know' how to 'think' in this medium. And because I felt so uncertain, I didn't even dignify my collection with glue.
The other photo is of a drawing of the potato plants on the allotment. I returned to this observational and representational work to 'get control'. I was drawn to the light and shade and felt comforted by the patterns. But I suppose, in a way, it does tend towards something more abstract.
