Two sketches today: V is for Vulcan Street with its cars and wires; J is for St John's church in the late afternoon sun.
These may become part of my Alphasketch exhibition in November: 26 streets for 26 letters of the alphabet.
The first was begun in morning light and finished in later afternoon - perhaps 2 hours +. Vulcan street is a short road off the London Road. An Edwardian terrace for the growing Bedford population. I'm guessing it led to the Vulcan works where Grtafton & co make cranes for the growing railway in the 1800s.
The second was sketched quickly (30 mins) just before the sunset in St John's street a few hundred yards closer to the river and town centre. St John's church was perhaps the place where John Bunyan awoke to his faith; it seems now to be a refuge of sorts. It looks more rural than it really is: I haven't painted the traffic which was zooming past at 6 p.m.
