Trees and a lamppost at the back of the Higgins. February twilight. Ilex and yew rise higher than the lamppost. The red-brick buildings of the houses on Newnham road visible beneath the trees - and the bike racks and the wall. It was something about the trees rising into their own darkness, and everything else draining of colour - even though I've restored it. I began tonally - just ink and shades of grey. But I felt the need to bring out some distinctions of brick, trunk and sky. Young folks gathered on the wall as I sketched. It was a darker 5:30 by the time I stopped. |
