This is my poor copy of Chalk Paths by Eric Ravilious: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/751655788/chalk-paths-by-eric-ravilious-print?ref=pla_similar_listing_top-1 It lacks his stylised geometry, his subtle colouring, his rhythmic composition and his skilful application of paint. Those aspects of Ravilious' art are what I came to appreciate in my struggles today. Ravilious' skill in illustration and design underpin the way he approached watercolour. There seems to be such sureness of touch in the patterning he found, and a discernment of how his subjects were both highly individual and richly metaphorical. These chalk paths appear both by the erosion of grass - and by the absence of paint, underlying the landscapes he loved. |
