Chalk and charcoal. After school on the green - with or without kids - but always with blossom: April 26 2021
By the time I finished and took a photo for the record, the kids had all left the green and gone home. There was a group of girls under the pink-blossoming cherry tree - and some boys chasing each other under the wide blue sky: a very gender-stereotyped scene. Then one dad and daughter came out to inspect what I was up to. They were very polite, and the girl was full of advice about printing with dandelions. She identified herself as the girl on the left.
As you can see, the shadows lengthened to the right as I sketched. If I'd been braver, I would have tried painting pinks and blues and greens, but all I had with me was a pad of coloured paper and a pot of chalk and charcoal. I see that I have distorted things - shortened the tree and darkened the sky. It was a challenge to judge the tones, but I leant into the flow and enjoyed the process.
