After the flood on Christmas day, a fisherman catches an writhing eel from the River Great Ouse. But he is disappointed. He was hoping for a pike. He removes the hook and returns the eel to the water. It is New Year's Day 2021. I hope this bodes well for the year ahead.
The life cycle of the European eel is amazing.
This adult may have been spawned in the Sargasso Sea and swum the Atlantic, up the channel and all round East Anglia - and then 75 miles up the Great Ouse. Or it may have matured from stocks introduced to the river earlier this year. I wonder if it will be renamed the UK eel and how its life will be affected by Brexit.
This is as far as I got with a sketch of the event.
