After the flood on Christmas day, a fisherman catches an writhing eel from the River Great Ouse. But he is disappointed. He was hoping for a pike. He removes the hook and returns the eel to the water. It is New Year's Day 2021. I hope this bodes well for the year ahead. The life cycle of the European eel is amazing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_eel#Life_history This adult may have been spawned in the Sargasso Sea and swum the Atlantic, up the channel and all round East Anglia - and then 75 miles up the Great Ouse. Or it may have matured from stocks introduced to the river earlier this year. I wonder if it will be renamed the UK eel and how its life will be affected by Brexit. This is as far as I got with a sketch of the event. |
