Pencil and gouache. One of Hockney's '12 portraits after Ingres in a Uniform style' (National Gallery officers 1999-2000) | Today I was with friends at 'Hockney's Eye' free exhibition (15/3 - 29/8) at the Fitzwilliam museum. The exhibition juxtaposes Hockney's experiments with perspective with some of the old masters such as Fra Angelico, Hogarth, Hobbema and Ingres. Working in pencil, i-Pad and paint, David Hockney shows an amazing sureness of hand, eye and heart in the way he handles subjects. We admired Hockney's versatility and his use of line. For me, Hockney's fascination with light, history and technique, although impressive, is not as moving as his humour and humanity. | My own experiments with ink lines. |
