A view over Derbyshire this evening from the Limestone Way, just above Winster. Flies were busy beneath the chestnuts, dandelions spangled the hillsides; sheep were grazing and their lambs were calling. The scene was therapeutic: the journey north had involved a 3-hour delay caused by a grisly traffic accident on the M1. Symbols of both life and death, as, coincidentally and simultaneously were being explored by Neil McGregor on Radio 4 - the 400 BC Egyptian corn effigy of Osiris. I was obliged to drink two pints of Pedigree in the wonderful Miners Standard pub. Tomorrow I will get properly stuck in to my painting retreat. |
