Dawlish Drive - with a view of the university buildings and tower block. I sat and sketched here on Tuesday, before those white clouds darkened and the rain forced me to pack away. I was struck by the how suddenly the imposing buildings stood at the mouth of a residential street designed on a very different scale. There was something amusing about the lollipop sapling with its slender stem rising above the far tower. I wonder for how much longer cars will be such a significant part of our urban landscape. The short-lived (hopefully) fuel crisis can only be a harbinger of longer ones to come, when the reign of the internal combustion engine finally gives way to something new. |
