Exeter Walk: one of the staggered rows of mixed Putnoe houses and bungalows connected by pedestrian walkways, with wide grass verges and winding hedgerows. It appeared virtually a silhouette against the afternoon brightness. These chimneyless wide gables with their vertical flues are a characteristic skyline of a particular generation of architecture. It can't only be my imagination that is haunted by these urban corners where alleyways connect, often under a streetlight. A place for encounters planned and accidental. A place close to home that is not quite home. An ordinary place, yes, but also a turning point which you may remember all your life. |
