This is a watercolour sketch of a flash photo taken of three stone figures. They appear on a panel at the base of their parents' tomb in the church of St Denys, Colmworth. They are part of the local Dyer family from the 17th century. Inscribed above, is what is described as the first English love poem written/published by a woman - their mother, CatherineDyer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_St_Denys,_Colmworth They clutch handkerchiefs in token of their grief for their parents who, in far larger statues, recline together under a pillared canopy. I felt sorry for the girls standing there, to the left of their four cold brothers, in the darkness, partially obscured by the altar - like afterthoughts. Though I guess, if they survived their parents, they may have decided on their place and 'look' in the tomb's design. |
